Kirby Games of the 90s: Platformers and Unusual Spin-Offs

Kirby spent the 90s mostly as a platformer series, but with more genre detours than most Nintendo franchises of the era, including a golf game.

Platformer timeline

• Kirby's Dream Land (1992, Game Boy), the original, without the Copy Ability
• Kirby's Adventure (1993, NES), which introduced the Copy Ability
• Kirby's Dream Land 2 (1995, Game Boy)
• Kirby Super Star (1996, SNES), an anthology of several shorter Kirby games in one package
• Kirby's Dream Land 3 (November 1997 North America, SNES)

Copy abilities

Kirby's Adventure (1993) introduced the ability to inhale enemies and copy their powers, a mechanic that became central to nearly every Kirby game afterward and is largely absent from the original Dream Land.

Spin-offs

Kirby's Dream Course (September 1994 Japan, February 1995 North America) turned Kirby into a golf-style ball you knock around isometric courses, a genuine genre departure rather than another platformer.

Beginner-friendly choices

Kirby's Dream Land (1992) is the simplest starting point by design, a short Game Boy platformer built for a general audience. Kirby Super Star (1996) is a good next step, since it bundles several shorter games of varying difficulty in one cartridge.
