90s Mac Games: Classics from the Macintosh Era
Classic Mac OS ran a much smaller, largely separate game library from DOS and Windows PCs. Rather than a long list of ports, the Mac's 90s identity came from a handful of genuine exclusives built specifically for it.
Classic Mac platforms
90s Mac gaming spanned both 68k-processor Macs and the newer PowerPC Macs introduced in 1994, running classic Mac OS (System 7 through Mac OS 9). None of this is the same environment as modern macOS, which is why very little of this library runs natively today without emulation.
Exclusive and shared releases
- Mac exclusives: Bungie's Marathon (December 1994), a first-person shooter answering DOS games like Wolfenstein 3D and Doom, followed by Marathon 2: Durandal (1995) and Marathon Infinity (1996). Ambrosia Software's space trading and combat game Escape Velocity (1996) was Mac-first as well.
- Shared, multi-platform titles: CD-ROM games like Myst shipped in both Mac and Windows versions, since their content (images, video, audio) wasn't tied to one operating system's graphics API the way action games often were.
Standout experiences
Beyond Marathon and Escape Velocity, Pangea Software's Bugdom (1999) is a well-remembered late-90s Mac original, a 3D action-adventure starring a beetle, released right at the edge of classic Mac OS's life before Mac OS X.
Access and preservation context
Most classic Mac OS games, including the ones above, don't run on modern macOS without a classic Mac emulator such as Mini vMac or SheepShaver, and you'll need a legally obtained copy of the original software to use with one. We don't have a current, verified Amazon listing for any of these titles to recommend here, unlike some of our other PC Games articles.
Frequently asked questions
Could 90s Mac computers run the same games as Windows PCs?
Rarely. Most DOS and Windows games were never ported to classic Mac OS. Some multi-platform CD-ROM titles, Myst being the best-known example, shipped in separate Mac versions, but a lot of the era's biggest PC franchises simply weren't available on Mac.
What are the best-known Mac-exclusive games from the 90s?
Bungie's Marathon trilogy (1994 to 1996) and Ambrosia Software's Escape Velocity (1996) are the most frequently cited Mac-first franchises from the decade.
Can I play these classic Mac games on a modern Mac?
Not directly. Classic Mac OS is a different environment from current macOS, so you'd need a classic Mac emulator like Mini vMac or SheepShaver and a legally obtained copy of the original software.
