90s Star Wars PC Games: Flight Sims to Strategy
LucasArts built two distinct kinds of Star Wars PC games through the 90s: dedicated space-combat simulators, and separate shooter and strategy titles set in the same universe.
Release timeline
- Star Wars: Rebel Assault (1993)
- Star Wars: X-Wing (1993)
- Star Wars: TIE Fighter (1994)
- Star Wars: Dark Forces (1995)
- Star Wars: X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter (1997)
- Star Wars: Rebellion, released as Star Wars: Supremacy in the UK (February 1998)
Flight combat
X-Wing (1993) and TIE Fighter (1994) let you fly for the Rebellion or the Empire respectively, building dedicated joystick support and mission structures years before space sims were mainstream. X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter (1997) added direct multiplayer dogfighting between the two.
Shooters and strategy
Dark Forces (1995) moved away from flight combat into a ground-based first-person shooter starring Kyle Katarn. Star Wars: Rebellion (1998) went the opposite direction, into galaxy-spanning strategy where you manage the Empire or the Rebellion as a whole rather than flying a single ship.
Choosing by play style
- Want to fly: start with X-Wing or TIE Fighter.
- Want a first-person shooter: Dark Forces.
- Want to command an empire: Star Wars: Rebellion.
All of these were later re-released on Steam and GOG.com; we don't have a verified current Amazon listing for any of them, so there's no product recommendation on this page.
Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between X-Wing and TIE Fighter?
X-Wing (1993) puts you in the Rebel Alliance's starfighters; TIE Fighter (1994) puts you on the Imperial side. X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter (1997) later let players from both games fly against each other directly.
Is Star Wars: Dark Forces a flight sim like X-Wing?
No. Dark Forces (1995) is a ground-based first-person shooter starring Kyle Katarn, distinct from the X-Wing and TIE Fighter space-combat series.
Can I still buy these 90s Star Wars PC games?
X-Wing, TIE Fighter, and related titles have been re-released digitally on Steam and GOG.com. We don't have a verified current Amazon listing for them, which is why this article doesn't include a product recommendation.
